Fall 2024 Internships
About New Heights Communications
Founded in 2010, we’re a woman-owned, progressive, full-service strategy and communications firm with a track record of winning tough fights. We serve advocacy and legal organizations, political groups, and CEOs who are making a difference—helping them move from brainstorming to goal setting to winning.
You’ll find us working for social justice in the biggest battles in Washington—and across the country. These days, that means fighting the climate crisis, ensuring equity in our national policies, supporting public transit, labor unions and working people. Protecting our elections. And much more. We’re passionate, creative and fun. And we’re looking for someone—or even a couple people—to round out our team.
Paid Intern
New Heights takes our internship program seriously. Not only do our interns act as full members of the team—joining client and all our team meetings and performing substantive work—we prepare you for careers in advocacy, politics, or public affairs. Or even (especially) for a job at New Heights. Meet some of our current interns here. (Fun fact: At one point, half of our full-time staff were former interns.) Interns can expect to:
- Create press lists, pitch media and develop media coverage reports for our clients;
- Craft social media and digital assets for clients;
- Develop creative ideas to get our clients and ourselves in the news;
- Be part of a close-knit, energetic team where everyone has a hand in everything;
- Leave with a published piece at the end of the program.
We expect a lot, but we give a lot, too. We provide lots of feedback and expect you to do the same. Interns leave us with a concrete set of skills and a full portfolio of writing projects—and press clips!
Ideal candidates are:
- Current students or recent graduates who have or are working toward a degree in communications, political science or related field;
- Passionate about social justice causes—and good at explaining why;
- Excellent writers who can quickly grasp new content and adapt easily to changing tone, voice, format and end-goals in writing;
- Highly motivated, mature, responsible, and able to handle multiple projects in a short time frame;
- Able to devote at least 10-15 hours per week during the semester.
- We’re open to fully remote interns, however, DC-based candidates are preferred. Our team meets twice weekly in person at our D.C. office.
And if this somehow doesn’t describe you, but you badly want to work with us anyway, give it a go and tell us why you’re the perfect candidate.
To apply:
Send a resume, cover letter and two non-academic writing samples that showcase your voice—ideally a blogpost or article—to info@newheightscommunications.com. We pay our interns $17.50/hour or we can work with your academic institution to ensure you receive academic credit. Interns may choose which option they prefer.
New Heights takes diversity, equity and inclusion seriously—our team, our clients and the world are better when served by a diverse team. BIPOC candidates are especially encouraged to apply.
